C'est en 1907 qu'arrive le plus grand nombre d'immigrants à Ellis Island. C'est l'année de tous les records : le 17 avril, on dénombre 11 747 arrivants. La plupart sont italiens et siciliens, pour eux les Etats-Unis sont un paradis pour les pauvres. Beaucoup de récits circulent et participent au mythe du paradis américain.
