Yes! New York can refer to the state of New York or to the city of New York. The state of New York is situated in the north-east of the US. The city of New York is located in the south of the state of New York.
New York City is composed of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. All five boroughs were created with the modern New York City in 1898.
At the end of the 1800s, many people emigrated to the US because they were poor, hungry and unemployed. Some also went there because they escaped religious persecution and wars. From 1892 to 1954, a total of 12 million people emigrated to the US.
Since its beginning, America has been known as the land of opportunity. Millions of immigrants left their homes to find there an opportunity to succeed. The author James Truslow Adams popularized the phrase "American Dream" in his 1931 book "The Epic of America".
Central Park is very famous and gigantic! In the park, there is a zoo and 8 lakes! You can do lots of activities such as boat rides, ice-skating and you can play softball!
The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island in New York. The statue is a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States. French sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi designed it, and its metal parts were built by Gustave Eiffel. The statue was inaugurated in 1886.
Times Square is a street intersection in Manhattan. It is very touristic and busy. Approximately 50 million visitors go there every year! There are lots of shops and brightly lit screens. It is sometimes referred to as "the Crossroads of the World".
