Federal and state laws - Culture et connaissance en anglais

Let's go Lumni!

- Maéva : What is the legal age in the US? Je suis majeure là bas ou pas ??

- Buddy : Ok, let me explain. In the US, there are federal laws, stating what is allowed and what is forbidden in the whole country. For example, the minimum legal drinking age is 21. So you won’t be able to drink alcohol, sorry.

- Maéva : I don’t care, I only drink juices.

- Buddy : In the US, same-sex marriage is allowed.

- Maéva : Cool!

- Buddy : These are federal laws that apply everywhere in the country. But you have to remember that the United States are, by definition, 50 different states, and each of them has its own legislation.

- Maéva : You mean the law is different in every single state?

- Buddy : Yes it is! You probably think that th US still have the death penalty?

- Buddy : Not in every state ! In Minnesota for example, or in Michigan, death penalty has been abolished. Let’s talk about the driving age. In France, it’s…?

- Maéva : Eighteen. But I think in the US it’s sixteen?

- Buddy : Not in every state! The driving age is indeed 16 in Dakota and Montana but in Connecticut, Florida, or Texas, you’ll have to wait until you’re 18 years old.

- Maéva : Ok...

- Buddy : Now imagine you want to buy a gun.

- Maéva : That’s very unlikely...

- Buddy : In California you need a licence to purchase a weapon, but you don’t need one in Texas.

- Maéva : That seems so crazy...

- Buddy : Oh, you want to hear crazy things? Here we go! In Kentucky, it is illegal to color your rabbit blue or green.

- Maéva : What?

- Buddy : In Massachusetts, it’s illegal to make an explosive golf ball

- Maéva : Attends mais je comprends pas le…

- Buddy : In Georgia it’s illegal to eat fried chicken with a fork.

- Maéva : Maaaais… c’est pas possible…

- Buddy : These are actual laws, believe me!

- Maéva : D’accord. D’accord. But you didn't answer my first question: what’s the legal age in the US?

- Buddy : Well, that’s very simple. The American legal age is… 18.

- Buddy : Yeah. Except in Alabama where the legal age is 19, and in Mississippi, where it’s 21.

- Maéva : Y a jamais rien de simple, hein?

- Buddy : Non !
