The Wild West - Culture et connaissance en anglais

Let's go Lumni!

Comment tu me trouves ?

- Buddy : I suppose you want to look like a cowboy?

- Maéva : A cowgirl! Look! I’m wearing the whole outfit : hat, pants, gloves, boots...

- Buddy : If you want to look like a real cowboy...

 Maéva : Cowgirl.

- Buddy : You should carry a knife, a lasso and a rifle.

- Maéva : Did cowboys really have all this stuff?

- Buddy : Sure, they had to protect themselves and their herd. Because you have to remember that cowboys were cow keepers, and they first had to protect their animals.

- Maéva : I guess the Far West was quite violent.

- Buddy : Oh yes it was, believe me. American colonisation started from the east of the continent, so the west was still a wild and dangerous area for Americans. By the way, what French people call « Far West » is actually called « Wild West » by Americans.

- Maéva : So why did they want to go west?

- Buddy : Because in 1848, gold was found in California. That was the beginning of the « Gold Rush ».

- Maéva : Ah oui, la fameuse Ruée vers l’or.

- Buddy : That’s it! Thousands of people came to the West find gold.

- Maéva : And bandits tried to steal it, right?

- Buddy : Of course they did ! There were no law officers, no judges. Gold miners had to defend themselves, that’s why there were so many gunfights.

- Maéva : Wow, life was quite dangerous then...

- Buddy : Yeah, living in the Wild West was very tough. There were drunk people, snakebites, a lot of various diseases...

- Maéva : People were often attacked by Indians.

- Buddy : You  should probably avoid saying « Indians », because this name comes from a mistake.

- Maéva : Yeah, I know: when Christophe Colomb discovered America, he thought he’d just arrived in India.

- Buddy : But of course he was mistaken. So the proper name of the first inhabitants is « Native Americans or Natives ».

- Maéva : Ok. People were often attacked by Native Americans, then.

- Buddy : Or by outlaws.

- Maéva : Outlaws?

- Buddy : People that are out of the law. Outlaws. Bandits like Jesse James, Billy the Kid, the Dalton Gang.

- Maéva : I like the Dalton Brothers, they’re so funny!

- Buddy : Not the real ones, believe me. They were bank robbers and murderers.

- Maéva : Oh, ils étaient plus drôles dans mon souvenir. Mais Billy the Kid, je me souviens de la BD, il était...

- Buddy : C’était un voleur. Il a tué neuf personnes.

- Buddy : Mais j’y peux rien, moi...
