The US became independent in 1776. The US were a small nation at the time, but the 13 colonies became a country. In 1803 they bought Louisiana. Up to the 19th century, it continued to grow and to expend west.
The Committee of Five started writing the Declaration on June 11th, and it was finished on July 4th. It was then signed on August 2nd. It's only in November that the text was sent to Great Britain.
The Committee of Five was in charge of writing the Declaration of Independence. It was composed of five men: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman. Among them, two then became presidents: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
American colonists did not have the same rights as citizens who actually lived in Great Britain and the colonies were not allowed to send representatives to Parliament. So, they could not vote on issues and taxes directly affecting them.
The Declaration of Independence did not solve all the problems. Major tensions between the states in the North and the Southern states rose. The division over the issue of slavery led to the civil war. This conflict started in 1861 and ended in 1865 with the defeat of the Confederate States of America.
